5G Performance
-
I'm using the EM9291 on an AT&T plan and I cannot get it to utilize 5G, it seems to insist upon just doing 4G LTE. Is this something other people are seeing when trying to use 5G?

@bendraper 5G often requires a 4G link initially and then a handoff if 5G is available. You can use
qmicli
to query the modem to get further debug info -
@tom what debug info would you suggest looking for? I can see that the preferred access tech is 5g although it’s using LTE. And I can see the signal quality is ~40% which doesn’t seem great but it’s been much worse before and I can’t seem to get it above 40 anyways. I have the antennas stuck to some plastic in a diamond array

@bendraper I can't provide too much further help here as our hardware really just acts a bridge to the Sierra modem, you may have to check Sierra's docs to see if they have some debug commands to run

@bendraper One idea I had is to change the bands of the modem so that it will only search for signals on specific 5G bands. I did this with my modem for LTE B3 through the use at AT commands. I linked a post where I provided a way to use these commands on the drone

I would go to Sierra Wireless website and download the AT command reference guide to understand how to use them. there are probably some other commands that could help you too, but the BAND one sticks out to me. Sierra also has a really good forum I would recommend.
@tom , this is the 3rd/4th I've linked the AT commands post to forum users. Is there any expected AT command support for the EM9291 like with previous modems? It is a functional workaround, but could save people a lot of time/trouble if it was available upfront. It really 'unlocks' the modem for more configurability, don't you think?
