VOXL2-mini USB to Ethernet not recognized
-
Hi!
We used VOXL2 and applied it to VTOL drones.
For communication, two LTE/5G modems + Helix modem are used simultaneously.
It works well without any problems. Sometimes the Helix modem distance is not displayed due to radio interference.It is recognized well in VOXL2, which I am testing by purchasing a VOLX2 mini for another project, but the Ethernet port is not recognized in VOXL2-mini.
The USB dongle is recognized well, but the Ethernet driver is not recognized. (Command: ifconfig)
Our employee zamin78 asked additional questions, but there were no dies, so we are asking again.Please check if there are any problems.
Thnaks,

HI @Jskim
Your setup is missing the power input cable:
https://docs.modalai.com/voxl2-mini-power/
It is required to operate the VOXL 2 Mini. -
@Jskim Not all usb ethernet adapter drivers are supported by default and may require building and installing the driver for your adapter.
Here is a known supported usb to ethernet adapter if it is easier to swap hardware than finding/building the correct driver.

@tom
We tested VOXL2 and VOXL2-mini.
The conclusion is that the USB to LAN Dongle is not recognized by the VOXL2-mini.
We also tested the VOXL2 with a 5G modem and it worked fine.
VOXL2-mini seems to be the problem.
Please let us know how to fix it.
-
@Jskim Interesting, we do test the USB hubs before shipping. Can you try upgrading to the latest SDK (1.1.2) and see if the issue persists.

Hi @Jskim
There is a known HW errata with Voxl2 Mini for USB3, please see the notes here:
https://docs.modalai.com/voxl2-mini-connectors/#j3-usb-3-10-pin
The Ethernet device may be trying to enumerate as USB3 only and creating the issue.I recommend trying a USB2 only cable, not the USB3 cable. Or, as the note says in the link, try removing the USB3 wires in your MCBL-00022 cable adapter. This would let the ETH device only enumerate as USB2.
Here is our cable site that may help you figure out the best cable to try for your setup: https://docs.modalai.com/cable-datasheets/
We do not have a set date yet for the hardware change on VOXL 2 Mini.
Let us know if this fixes your problem, and we do apologize for any frustrations this may have caused if indeed it is the issue.Thanks!

@Vinny
I changed USB3 to USB2 and it worked fine.
We are developing VOXL2 mini to work with tactical radios.
VOXL2 is too big, so we are developing VOXL2 mini.
Does changing the VOXL2 mini HW change the shape?
We want to use a USB3.0 camera connected to the VOXL2 mini USB3 port.
It is difficult to use the USB 2.0 port because the camera resolution is only 640x480@30fps. Please let me know if you have any ideas. -
HI @Jskim
When we introduce the fix for VOXL 2 Mini to fix the USB3 cap issue, we will NOT change the shape at all. There are a few other EOL/Obsolete parts on there that we will just replace, but we would not impact any features or usability, aside from fixing USB3
In the meantime, if USB3 is really required on your side, try two things:-
See if you can add compression on your image sensor, like H.265 to reduce needed bandwidth. If you can do that, USB2 should be plenty at higher resolutions.
Check out this site for rough estimates of compression rates: https://imagekit.io/blog/h264-vs-h265/

See if you can work with a cable vendor to include the series caps direct in your cable as per our suggestion in Tech Docs. If this becomes prohibitive, we can try to develop a solution for you, but we can't guarantee it would meet your size or weight constraints, and it may take us a few months to do so.

@Vinny
We are testing with a tactical radio USB port connected to the VOXL-mini USB port.
After rebooting, the IP changes from 10.1.12.60 to 169.254.68.184.
Can you tell me how to fix the USB IP address?
(In the case of the DoodleLab modem, the IP does not change after rebooting).

-
@Jskim For the doodle modems the voxl-modem service monitors the network interface and resets the IP address to the correct value if it is changed for whatever reason. Source is here:
You could hijack this same logic for your use case

@tom
Thanks for the reply.
We are using Doodle+5G modem well on VTOL fixed wing.
Regarding the above, we are preparing another project using VOXL2-mini.
I am using Trellisware TW-650 modem (USB port), not Doodle modem.
Please tell me how to fix the IP address when using USB.Thanks,
-
@Jskim As I said above you'll have to do some custom scripting but can pull the logic from that voxl-modem-start bash script

@tom
Thanks for the reply.- we have tried to test the HDMI camera using USB3 To HDMI Adapter.
*Resolution: 720p @30fps
The test result is that uvc server is not running.
The uvc server only supports 640x480@30fps or 800x600@10fp.
2. is there a problem with uvc server? Or am I configuring it wrong, I don't understand.
The conclusion is that the uvc server cannot support HDMI camera FHD, HD.
3. I ordered a USB3.0 camera. Finally, I will try to connect the USB3.0 camera to test it. (Arducam 13MP IMX258 OIS Motorised Focus USB 3.0 Camera Module)(Question)
- is there any other solution?
Thanks,

@Jskim Can you please open a new thread for this new issue?
