Starling 2 + BalenaCloud: Scalable Fleet Management for Autonomous Drones?
-
We are currently evaluating the Starling 2 drone for use in a long-term indoor robotics project that may involve deploying a fleet of autonomous drones operating simultaneously in a greenhouse environment.
As part of our infrastructure planning, we are considering the use of BalenaCloud to manage containerized applications and deploy software updates remotely to multiple devices. However, we’ve noticed that VOXL 2 does not appear as a supported device on Balena’s platform, and there is no official BalenaOS image for it.
We understand VOXL 2 runs Ubuntu Linux and supports Docker, which suggests a possible manual integration with Balena (e.g., via the Balena Supervisor). That said, we wanted to reach out and ask:
-
Has ModalAI explored or officially supported integration with BalenaCloud or similar container-based fleet management systems?
-
Is there an alternative fleet management or OTA (over-the-air) update solution you recommend for managing multiple Starling 2 units?
-
Are there any known technical limitations or challenges when attempting to register VOXL-based devices with external platforms like Balena?
Our main concern is scalability and maintainability, especially when managing many drones in the field that may require synchronized software updates or remote diagnostics.
We would greatly appreciate any guidance, best practices, or recommended tools for addressing this kind of use case.
