4k Camera with the VOXL 2
-
Hello, everyone:
I am trying to upgrade the camera resolution on the VOXL2 Flight Deck to stream HD video to the ground. As I do not use them I am planning on substituting either the stereo cameras or the hires one for one capable of recording in HD. I was considering buying this camera but it seems to be made for the VOXL and I am not sure if it be compatible with the VOXL2. Would this be a viable option or are there better alternatives for the VOXL2.
Thanks in advanced

Hi @Jose-Alfredo-Rosas-Cordova!
Compatible 4K cameras for the voxl2 can be found in the following documentation: https://docs.modalai.com/voxl2-camera-configs/
As for how to actually setup the 4K stream - when you run a 'voxl-configure-cameras' it will create a file in /etc/modalai/voxl-camera-server.conf. There are parameters called
stream_heightandstream_widthand you can change those there. HOWEVER, I will say the stream is meant to be at 640x480 since its getting encoded and pushed to voxl-portal or whatever you are intending on watching the stream through (such as VLC from an rtsp stream). So the onboard capture/save as a .avi or .mp4 should be the 4K video. If you push this to voxl portal, it will heavily slow down the stream right now. This can be found in the voxl-camera-server documentation here: https://docs.modalai.com/voxl-camera-server/Let me know if this answered your questions

Hello @Zachary-Lowell-0 !
So, if I understood correctly I can record HD video and save it onboard to watch it later but right now it is not possible to stream it for a live view without killing the refresh rate, right?

Yes it is much easier to record in HD without taking a hit to framerate. You can use voxl-streamer to throttle the dimensions higher however, I wouldn't advise this for right now
